Build Notes

This is Hasegawa’s 1979 vintage kit of the Type 97 Army fighter. Despite the age of the tooling, and all these years later, I wouldn’t think twice about buying this again; It’s a great kit and easy build. I built this out-of-the-box. I wasn’t confident that I could get the cowling paint to match the red stripes and hinomarus on the decal sheet so created my own masks and just painted all the markings. I’m glad I did this because I think it takes the build to the next level.

This represents an aircraft belonging to the 2nd Chutai of the 64th Sentai during the Nomonhan Incident in 1939. I built this during a time when I was teaching myself how to heavily weather Japanese aircraft and for reasons I don’t recall, chose to only very subtly weather this build. There’s nothing here beyond a light panel wash and some very light exhaust stains.
