Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden

The 341st Kōkūtai, nicknamed the Shishi Butai (Lion Unit), holds a historic position as the very first front-line Imperial Japanese Navy unit to equip and deploy the Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden in combat.

Unlike the elite 343rd Kōkūtai which later flew the low-wing Shiden Kai (N1K2-J) over Japan, the 341st took the mid-wing, early production variants into the meat-grinder battles of Formosa and the Philippines during the chaotic late months of 1944.
